Individual
benefits to experiencing Flow
Previous research on work motivation/engagement
has mainly focused on the practical outcomes to the organization, that
being productivity. Research is now starting to examine individual outcomes
and levels of engagement, however no known research has investigated
motivation/engagement in relation to a complete mental health model.
Investigating the relationship between motivation/engagement and a complete
mental health model, this study is not limited to the often ill perceived
suggestion that one is mentally healthy if not suffering from a mental
illness. The complete mental health model, explores mental health along
a continuum from complete mental illness (floundering) to complete mental
health (flourishing) (Synder & Lopez, 2002).
Previous studies have tended to
focus on the detrimental effects when one is disengaged or unmotivated,
however little research has explored the positive outcomes to the individual
when motivated or engaged. Utilizing the complete mental health model
this research aims to investigate the positive outcomes to experiencing
flow, such as; authentic happiness, self-esteem, self efficacy, positive
emotions and personal growth.
