Acceptable methods used to measure
flow (optimal experience) in the workplace have been achieved using
the experience sampling method (ESM), where an individual wears a pager
which randomly sounds off at intervals during the day. At that time
the participant is asked to complete a brief questionnaire on the activity
currently being undertaken. This method is quite time consuming and
intrusive as he/she is randomly interrupted during busy work hours,
this may also interfere with the flow experience. This research aims
to develop a questionnaire which is reliable, valid and quick to administer.
It will be of benefit to other researchers wanting to carry out large
studies on the flow experience, and to managers wanting to test for
optimal functioning (flow) in the workplace.
